US Government Transfers 9,261 Bitcoin

The US government has moved 9,261 Bitcoin worth approximately $770 million to Coinbase Prime, bringing a large amount of cryptocurrency tied to law enforcement seizures into the institutional custody platform.

The transfers took place over two days and involve Bitcoin connected to several previous cryptocurrency investigations and asset seizures. The movement also includes 2,456 BTC from previously unidentified holdings, adding another layer of uncertainty around the origin of the funds.

The transfers highlight the continued movement of cryptocurrency seized by US authorities as federal agencies manage digital assets connected to past investigations and exploits.

Bitcoin Linked to Bitfinex and Binance Seizures

A significant portion of the transferred Bitcoin is connected to previously identified government seizures. About half of the 9,261 BTC originated from funds recovered from the hackers responsible for the Bitfinex theft, while another portion came from known Binance-related seizures.

The Bitfinex-linked Bitcoin forms one of the largest components of the latest transfer. The assets were recovered as part of the US government's efforts to trace and seize cryptocurrency connected to the 2016 Bitfinex hack.

Another portion of the funds is associated with previously known Binance seizures. Together, these identified holdings account for a substantial part of the Bitcoin now held through the government's Coinbase Prime custody arrangement.

2,456 BTC Comes From Previously Unknown Holdings

The most notable part of the transfer involves 2,456 BTC that had not previously been identified as part of the government's known holdings.

Those coins were sent to the US government's seizure address on Coinbase Prime and may represent newly identified law enforcement seizures. The movement therefore does not necessarily indicate a new sale or liquidation, but it does show that authorities continue to identify and secure cryptocurrency connected to investigations.

The newly identified Bitcoin also demonstrates the difficulty of tracking government-held crypto assets. Onchain movements can reveal transfers between wallets, but the underlying reason for a transaction may not always be immediately clear without additional information from the relevant authorities.

Coinbase Prime Continues as Government Custodian

Coinbase Prime has become an important part of the US government's custody infrastructure for seized cryptocurrency. The US Marshals Service has used Coinbase Prime as a custody provider for seized digital assets since 2024.

The arrangement allows seized digital assets to be held through an institutional custody platform while authorities manage assets connected to criminal investigations and forfeiture proceedings.

For the latest transfer, the use of Coinbase Prime does not by itself establish that the Bitcoin is being prepared for sale. The destination indicates custody of the assets, while any eventual disposition would depend on government decisions and applicable policies.

Bitcoin Sale Speculation Returns

Large government transfers of Bitcoin have previously generated speculation that authorities could sell some of the assets. However, the current US policy framework has changed the backdrop for government-held Bitcoin.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order in March 2025 establishing the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. The order specified that Bitcoin held by the federal government through forfeiture or criminal and civil asset proceedings should be retained rather than sold and become part of the reserve.

That policy makes a straightforward interpretation of a Coinbase Prime transfer as an imminent Bitcoin sale less certain. Moving seized BTC to a designated institutional custodian can occur without indicating that the government intends to liquidate the assets.

The distinction is important because government-controlled Bitcoin transfers can involve custody, administration, asset consolidation or other operational requirements rather than an immediate market transaction.

Previous Government Crypto Transfer

The latest movement follows another significant transfer earlier in the year. In July, the US government moved approximately $297 million worth of Bitcoin and Ether to Coinbase Prime.

Those assets also originated from high-profile cryptocurrency seizures. The repeated use of Coinbase Prime illustrates the role institutional custody infrastructure plays as US authorities manage digital assets recovered through enforcement actions.

The growing scale of government-held digital assets means wallet movements can attract considerable attention from cryptocurrency markets. However, the transfer of funds between government-controlled addresses and a custody platform does not automatically mean those assets are entering the open market.

What the 9,261 BTC Transfer Means

The movement of 9,261 BTC places approximately $770 million worth of Bitcoin under Coinbase Prime custody, with the holdings connected to multiple seizure sources.

The 2,456 BTC from previously unknown holdings is particularly notable because its origin has not been fully established. The funds may represent additional law enforcement seizures, but further information would be required to determine their precise source and case history.

For now, the transfer demonstrates that US authorities continue to recover, consolidate and manage significant cryptocurrency holdings. With the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve policy in place, future government Bitcoin movements will likely continue to attract attention, but custody transfers should be distinguished from confirmed sales or liquidations.
