Coinbase and Gennius Plan ONED USD Stablecoin Integration With Latin American Banks

Coinbase and Gennius Target Banking Apps in Argentina

Coinbase and fintech infrastructure provider Gennius are planning to introduce ONED USD stablecoin services through Latin American banking apps, beginning with Argentina. The initiative was outlined in a Coinbase announcement on October 9 and aims to make digital-dollar payments and crypto services available through customers’ existing banking relationships.

Under the proposed service, customers would be able to convert eligible deposits into ONED USD, transfer funds around the clock and make purchases through Visa. Coinbase described the concept as bringing stablecoin payments, custody and trading directly into a banking app.

The companies have not disclosed the names of participating banks or provided a confirmed public launch date. Coinbase’s announcement also does not clarify which deposits will qualify, which currencies or account types will be supported, or the precise terms for converting ONED USD back into cash.

How ONED USD Fits Into Coinbase’s Stablecoin Infrastructure

ONED USD is a partner-branded stablecoin associated with Coinbase’s Custom Stablecoins service. According to Coinbase’s product documentation, ONED is backed on a one-to-one basis by USDC held in Coinbase custody.

Coinbase’s Custom Stablecoins documentation describes the infrastructure used to manage issuance, redemption and reserves. Coinbase also supports one-for-one exchanges between its Custom Stablecoins and USDC through its platform, while its developer documentation describes onchain swaps with USDC.

This structure is important because ONED USD should not automatically be treated as a conventional bank deposit. It is a digital asset backed by USDC, and its use, redemption and availability depend on the relevant product arrangements. Customers would need clear information about eligibility, fees, redemption conditions and any restrictions before using the service.

Gennius Wants to Connect Digital Dollars With Existing Financial Services

Gennius provides infrastructure designed to connect financial services and tokenized value across banking and fintech ecosystems. The company has described the Coinbase collaboration as a way for financial institutions to introduce digital-asset functionality without replacing their existing systems.

The planned offering also includes local-currency on-ramps and off-ramps. These are services that let customers move between traditional money and digital assets, potentially simplifying the process of converting local currency into a dollar-linked token and converting it back.

Gennius had previously announced ONED USD’s launch in July 2026 in a company-related announcement published by Colombia Fintech. That announcement presented the token as a way to connect rewards, payments and digital assets across financial ecosystems. The new banking-app initiative would extend its intended reach by making ONED USD accessible through established banking channels.

However, the announcement does not confirm that the service is already live or that every bank using Gennius will offer ONED USD. Participating institutions, rollout schedules and supported features remain to be clarified.

Why Argentina Is an Important Starting Point

Argentina has a well-established market for cryptocurrency and dollar-linked digital assets. Stablecoins can provide an alternative way to hold value linked to the U.S. dollar, although they carry risks and are not identical to deposits or cash held at a bank.

A Chainalysis report on cryptocurrency adoption in Latin America discusses the role crypto can play in regional financial activity, including access to digital assets and foreign-currency alternatives. Bringing stablecoin services into banking apps could make them easier to access for customers who would otherwise need to use a separate crypto platform.

The proposed approach could also reduce friction between traditional banking and digital-asset services. Customers may be able to use a familiar banking interface for conversions and transfers instead of managing every step through a standalone exchange or wallet. The actual convenience will depend on how each participating bank implements the service and what fees, limits and eligibility requirements apply.

Visa Spending and 24/7 Transfers Are Key Planned Features

The proposed integration combines three functions: stablecoin conversion, transfers at any time and spending through Visa. Together, these features would aim to make ONED USD useful for payments rather than limiting it to holding or trading a digital asset.

Round-the-clock transfers could allow customers to move funds outside conventional banking hours. Visa spending could provide a bridge between a digital-dollar balance and everyday purchases, depending on how the payment card and underlying account are configured.

Important operational details remain unknown. The companies have not publicly specified the participating banks, the expected rollout date, transaction limits, fees, supported currencies or the full redemption process. Those details will help determine how the service works in practice and what protections customers receive.

What the Planned Integration Could Mean for Stablecoin Adoption

The Coinbase–Gennius initiative reflects an effort to distribute stablecoins through existing financial institutions rather than relying exclusively on crypto-native apps. If launched as described, ONED USD could give eligible banking customers a more direct route to digital-dollar transfers and Visa-based spending.

For now, the initiative remains a plan with key implementation details unannounced. The next milestones to watch are the confirmation of participating banks, customer launch dates and the terms governing conversions, custody and redemption. Until those details are published, the announcement should be understood as a proposed expansion of stablecoin access, not evidence that the service is already available across Argentina or Latin America.
