Chainlink Launches CustodySync to Connect Institutional Assets With DeFi Lending

Chainlink has introduced CustodySync with Anchorage Digital Bank to help institutions borrow from decentralized finance (DeFi) lending markets while keeping their digital assets in qualified custody. The system coordinates collateral balances, shared price data, margin monitoring, and liquidation processes between custodians and onchain lending protocols.

Chainlink Introduces CustodySync for Institutional DeFi Borrowing

Chainlink introduced CustodySync on October 26, 2026, to connect qualified digital asset custodians with decentralized finance lending markets. The solution is designed to let institutional clients borrow against eligible digital assets without transferring the underlying collateral out of their existing custody arrangements.

Anchorage Digital Bank, N.A., is the official launch partner. Its Atlas Collateral Management product works alongside CustodySync to coordinate collateral monitoring, loan activity, margin requirements, and liquidation procedures. The arrangement aims to address a longstanding challenge for institutions that need qualified custody but also want access to onchain lending liquidity.

The launch targets a substantial pool of potentially underused capital. Chainlink estimates that approximately $700 billion in digital assets is held under custody, while DeFi lending markets have more than $80 billion in deposits and over $30 billion in active loans. These figures highlight the potential market opportunity, although they do not establish how much custodial capital will ultimately enter DeFi through CustodySync.

How CustodySync Connects Custody and Onchain Lending

CustodySync coordinates two systems that traditionally operate separately: a custodian's collateral management infrastructure and an onchain lending protocol. The custodian continues to maintain the underlying assets, while the lending market provides access to liquidity. Chainlink's infrastructure synchronizes the information and authorized actions required to support the loan.

Under the design, Chainlink Proof of Reserve publishes verifiable information about custody balances onchain. A transfer-restricted receipt token then represents the custodied assets within the lending integration. The receipt token does not provide a general claim on the underlying assets outside that integration, according to Chainlink's product description.

Borrowers can obtain funds from the lending market while the custodian retains control of the collateral. Borrowing, repayment, and interest accrual are recorded in the custodian's systems, with CustodySync coordinating relevant activity between the offchain records and onchain contracts. This structure is intended to let institutions access DeFi lending without adopting a conventional model in which collateral must be transferred directly into a lending protocol.

Shared Price Data Helps Align Loan Valuations

A central feature of CustodySync is its use of shared pricing data. Custodians and DeFi lending protocols may maintain separate systems for tracking collateral values and calculating loan-to-value ratios, or LTV. If those systems use different prices or update at different times, they can disagree about a loan's risk level.

Such discrepancies can have financial consequences. One system might determine that a position requires liquidation while another still considers it adequately collateralized. Alternatively, a delayed risk assessment could allow a loan to remain open after its collateral has fallen below the required threshold.

CustodySync uses Chainlink Data Feeds to provide price information to onchain lending markets and Chainlink Data Streams to deliver matching values to custodians' offchain systems. By using the same price inputs, both sides can calculate LTV more consistently. The shared data approach is designed to reduce discrepancies, although it does not eliminate market volatility or every operational risk associated with lending.

Anchorage Retains Collateral and Manages Liquidations

Anchorage's Atlas Collateral Management product provides the custody and collateral-management component of the arrangement. The custodian remains responsible for the assets held within its custody infrastructure, while the lending protocol supplies liquidity under its own lending rules and requirements.

If a loan breaches its defined liquidation threshold, the appointed collateral agent handles the sale through its own process. CustodySync records the committed sale proceeds onchain while the transaction settles, with final settlement designed to occur through a single atomic transaction. This process is intended to keep the lending market's records aligned with the collateral agent's actions during liquidation.

Nathan McCauley, Anchorage Digital's chief executive and co-founder, said institutions should not have to choose between qualified custody and onchain liquidity. He added that Anchorage's collaboration with Chainlink enables its clients to keep assets in regulated custody while the company monitors loan health and manages margin and liquidation across the loan lifecycle.

Chainlink Runtime Environment Coordinates the Workflow

CustodySync combines several components of Chainlink's infrastructure rather than relying on a single data service. The Chainlink Runtime Environment, or CRE, coordinates authorized actions between custody systems and onchain contracts. It monitors the custodian's collateral management system, initiates corresponding onchain operations within the agreed permissions, and synchronizes loan activity with custody records.

Proof of Reserve supplies verifiable information about custody balances, while Data Feeds and Data Streams support consistent collateral pricing. Standardized smart contracts provide the framework through which collateral and lending actions are executed. These contracts are designed by Chainlink and deployed by the lending market or a risk curator.

The combined system is intended to reduce the complexity of building a separate integration for every lending market. Custodians may benefit from lower operational overhead and a more standardized route into DeFi, while lending protocols gain access to a potential pool of institutional borrowers whose assets previously remained outside their reach.

What CustodySync Could Mean for DeFi Markets

For institutional investors, the main proposition is access to borrowing without giving up an existing qualified-custody arrangement. This may be relevant to organizations whose regulatory obligations, investment mandates, or internal risk policies limit their ability to move assets directly into smart contracts.

For DeFi lending protocols, the solution offers a framework for accepting exposure backed by assets that remain under a custodian's control. It could help connect institutional collateral with onchain liquidity, provided that custodians, lending markets, and borrowers complete the required integrations and meet their respective risk and operational requirements.

However, the product announcement does not establish the total value of assets that will be used through CustodySync, nor does it guarantee that every feature will be available across all custodians. Chainlink also notes that feature availability may vary. Adoption will depend on participating institutions, supported lending markets, implementation details, and the terms governing individual arrangements.

CustodySync represents an effort to connect institutional custody infrastructure with DeFi lending while keeping collateral management and pricing information coordinated. Its practical impact will depend on how widely the system is adopted and how effectively the participating organizations manage lending, collateral, and liquidation risks.
