Metaplanet Transfers 2,400 BTC to Coinbase Prime

Metaplanet has transferred another large amount of Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime, adding to a series of movements that have attracted attention from onchain trackers.

According to Arkham’s tracked Metaplanet entity data, the Tokyo-listed Bitcoin treasury company moved approximately 2,400 BTC, valued at around $186 million, to Coinbase Prime during a three-hour period on Aug. 31.

The transfers were split across six separate transactions. Individual deposits ranged from 103 BTC to 800 BTC, with the largest transaction involving 800 BTC, worth approximately $62 million. That transaction occurred roughly 30 minutes before the remaining transfers were made.

The latest movement is notable because it follows two other substantial transfers to Coinbase Prime within the same week.

Three Major Coinbase Prime Transfers in One Week

Metaplanet had already transferred 1,000 BTC to Coinbase Prime on Aug. 25, according to reporting from Bitcoin.com News. That transaction was worth approximately $79.77 million at the time.

Just three days later, on Aug. 28, the company moved another 1,350 BTC to Coinbase Prime. That transfer was valued at roughly $108 million.

Separately, blockchain analytics platform Lookonchain flagged another group of transactions around Aug. 29. The transfers pushed the tracked 24-hour movement to approximately 3,000 BTC, or about $237 million, although the available reporting does not establish how much of that amount overlaps with the other transactions.

Looking only at the three clearly identified Coinbase Prime transfers — 1,000 BTC, 1,350 BTC and 2,400 BTC — Metaplanet has moved at least 4,750 BTC, worth approximately $374 million, into Coinbase Prime custody in less than a week.

However, the transfers themselves do not confirm that Metaplanet has sold the Bitcoin.

Metaplanet Still Reports 43,000 BTC

Despite the large onchain movements, Metaplanet continues to report 43,000 BTC as part of its Bitcoin holdings.

Data from Bitcoin Treasuries puts those holdings at roughly $3.48 billion based on the figures provided in the source material. Metaplanet's reported average acquisition price is approximately $96,191 per BTC.

That distinction is important when interpreting large transfers. Moving Bitcoin to an exchange or institutional custody platform does not automatically mean the assets have been sold. The available information does not show a confirmed reduction in Metaplanet’s reported Bitcoin holdings associated with the recent Coinbase Prime deposits.

Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich has also addressed speculation surrounding the transfers. In comments reported earlier this month, Gerovich said the movements were custodial in nature and did not indicate “any intention to liquidate.” Yahoo Finance reported on the company's explanation.

Why Coinbase Prime Matters

Coinbase Prime is designed for institutional cryptocurrency activity and provides services including custody, trading and other institutional infrastructure.

That makes the destination relevant to understanding Metaplanet’s movements. A transfer to Coinbase Prime can potentially place Bitcoin in an environment where institutional custody, over-the-counter execution and collateral-related services are available.

Still, the destination alone cannot establish what Metaplanet intends to do with the coins.

Without a confirmed sale, the transfers should therefore be viewed as movements of custody rather than evidence that the company has reduced its Bitcoin position.

Metaplanet’s Superplanet Plans Add Another Layer

The recent transfers also come as Metaplanet pursues a broader Bitcoin-related corporate strategy.

The company has proposed contributing 2,100 BTC and $2.5 million in cash — equivalent to about 4.9% of its current reported Bitcoin holdings — to a new venture called Superplanet.

According to the source material, Superplanet is planned as a U.S.-based, Nasdaq-listed Bitcoin treasury platform being developed with Super League Enterprises. The proposed transaction would require additional steps before completion, including a Super League shareholder vote targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, as well as Nasdaq filings and regulatory approvals in both the United States and Japan.

The pending structure provides context for why custody arrangements and the location of Metaplanet’s Bitcoin could be important. However, the available information does not establish that the recent Coinbase Prime transfers were specifically made in preparation for the Superplanet transaction.

Bitcoin Price Remains Below Metaplanet’s Average Cost

Bitcoin’s market price adds another consideration to the recent movements.

The source material places Bitcoin near $78,000 during the previous week, while Metaplanet’s reported average acquisition cost stands at approximately $96,191 per BTC. That leaves the market price substantially below the company’s stated average purchase price.

The difference does not prove that Metaplanet would avoid selling Bitcoin, nor does it rule out a future sale. It simply provides additional market context for the company’s current treasury position.

For now, the clearest data point is that Metaplanet continues to report 43,000 BTC while transferring substantial amounts of Bitcoin into Coinbase Prime.

What the Transfers Mean for Metaplanet

Metaplanet’s latest 2,400 BTC transfer is significant because of its size and because it follows two other large Coinbase Prime movements within days.

At least 4,750 BTC has been transferred in the three clearly identified transactions, representing roughly $374 million at the valuations cited in the source material. Yet there has been no confirmed corresponding reduction in the company’s reported Bitcoin holdings.

The key distinction is between Bitcoin movement and Bitcoin disposal. Until a confirmed sale or reduction in reported holdings occurs, the available evidence supports describing the activity as a series of large custody transfers rather than a confirmed liquidation.

As Metaplanet advances its wider Bitcoin treasury strategy and the proposed Superplanet venture, future wallet movements, company disclosures and changes to its reported BTC holdings will provide a clearer picture of how the transferred assets are ultimately being used.
