Coinbase Q3 Earnings: Analysts Split on Crypto Trading Recovery

Coinbase is preparing to report third-quarter 2026 earnings as analysts assess whether a September rebound in crypto trading can lift revenue. Estimates differ on trading volumes and profitability, while stablecoin income, derivatives, and Base remain important parts of the exchange’s business outlook.

Coinbase Q3 Earnings: Analysts Split on Crypto Trading Recovery

Coinbase Earnings Put Crypto Trading Recovery to the Test

Coinbase Global is scheduled to release its third-quarter 2026 financial results after the U.S. market closes on Thursday, October 29. The results arrive as analysts assess whether the recovery in cryptocurrency trading activity during September was strong enough to improve the exchange’s financial performance.

Crypto trading activity had fallen to multiyear lows in June before prices and trading volumes began recovering. However, the extent of that rebound—and its ability to generate additional revenue for exchanges—remains uncertain. Coinbase’s results could provide a clearer picture of how the shift in market activity affected its business during the July-to-September quarter.

The uncertainty follows a sharp decline in Robinhood Markets’ cryptocurrency transaction revenue. Robinhood recorded a 55% drop in crypto transaction revenue as crypto trading volume fell 38% during the period. At the same time, its options and equities trading revenue increased, while prediction markets generated $173 million, more than six times the year-earlier figure.

The contrast highlights the importance of revenue diversification for companies operating in financial markets. Coinbase continues to generate a significant portion of its revenue from customers trading digital assets, making its financial performance sensitive to crypto prices, trading volumes, and the fees it can collect.

Wall Street Forecasts Differ on Trading Volume and Revenue

Analysts broadly expect Coinbase’s trading business to improve from the second quarter, but their estimates show different views of the scale of that recovery. Their forecasts also vary on how much trading activity will translate into transaction revenue and overall profitability.

JPMorgan, which rates Coinbase overweight, forecasts quarterly trading volume of $173 billion. Barclays projects $147 billion, while Oppenheimer expects $141 billion. Across these estimates, transaction revenue forecasts range from $578 million to $694 million, while total revenue estimates span approximately $1.2 billion to $1.4 billion.

Forecasts for adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) also differ. JPMorgan estimates $323 million, Barclays forecasts $360 million despite its underweight rating, and Oppenheimer projects $262 million while maintaining an outperform rating. These figures represent analyst expectations rather than confirmed financial results.

The differences reflect uncertainty about trading momentum and revenue generation. Barclays has pointed to a slowdown in spot trading activity during early October following September’s improvement. Oppenheimer has reduced its trading-volume forecast by 20% amid weaker market activity. Those developments suggest that a stronger September alone may not establish a sustained recovery.

Robinhood’s Results Raise Questions About Trading Economics

Robinhood’s reported crypto revenue decline has become a relevant comparison for Coinbase because both businesses can benefit from increased retail participation in digital-asset markets. However, their revenue mixes differ, and performance in one company does not automatically establish what the other will report.

Robinhood’s quarterly results showed that rising activity in some areas did not prevent crypto transaction revenue from falling. Its $173 million in prediction-market revenue also illustrates how newer product categories can contribute to a brokerage’s business alongside traditional trading services.

For Coinbase, the central issue is how much revenue it can generate from each dollar of trading volume. Retail customers have historically generated more revenue per dollar traded than institutional clients, making the mix of customers and products an important factor in its results.

Matthew Sigel, VanEck’s head of digital assets, highlighted concerns about pricing across brokers and exchanges in an October 2026 post on X. He wrote: “We've been tracking every broker/exchange that has reported Q3 and the obvious weak link is pricing.” Sigel also pointed to pressure across options, equities, and crypto as firms struggle to convert market activity into revenue.

USDC Income Provides Another Revenue Stream

Stablecoin-related income is another major component of Coinbase’s financial outlook. The exchange receives a share of the income generated by reserves backing USDC, the dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle. Unlike transaction fees, this revenue stream is linked to reserve balances and the terms of the companies’ commercial arrangement.

JPMorgan estimates Coinbase will generate $320 million in stablecoin revenue during the third quarter. That forecast could provide a meaningful contribution to total revenue even if trading activity proves weaker than expected. However, it remains an estimate until Coinbase publishes its results.

The business also faces risks. Lower interest rates can reduce the income generated by USDC reserves, while changes in stablecoin balances and revenue-sharing arrangements can affect Coinbase’s share. This means stablecoin revenue is not entirely independent of market conditions, even though it does not rely on customers executing trades in the same way as transaction-fee revenue.

Coinbase’s financial disclosures explain its stablecoin revenue arrangement with Circle. Investors can review the company’s SEC filings for details on how this income is calculated and how it contributes to subscription and services revenue. Circle also provides information about USDC and its reserve structure.

Derivatives Expansion Faces a Mixed Trading Picture

Coinbase has been expanding beyond spot cryptocurrency trading through derivatives and other financial products. Its acquisition of Deribit, a major crypto derivatives exchange, expanded its presence in options and futures markets and gives the company additional opportunities to serve customers with different trading needs.

Recent activity, however, has been mixed. Barclays estimated that Coinbase International’s futures volume declined 12% from the second quarter, while Deribit’s combined options and futures volume increased by just 2%. The figures suggest that expansion into derivatives does not necessarily shield Coinbase from changes in broader market demand.

Derivatives can broaden an exchange’s product offering, but revenue still depends on trading activity, market conditions, competition, and pricing. Coinbase’s earnings will help show how these activities contributed to the quarter, although a single reporting period may not establish a longer-term trend.

Base and Tokenization Shape the Longer-Term Outlook

Analysts also differ over how quickly Coinbase’s newer businesses could reduce its reliance on retail trading and stablecoin income. JPMorgan sees potential in tokenization, payments, and Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer 2 network. Barclays is more cautious about whether these areas can offset pressure in the company’s established revenue streams.

Base provides blockchain infrastructure for applications and onchain transactions. Tokenization involves representing assets or rights digitally on a blockchain, while crypto payment services aim to support the movement of value between users and businesses. These activities could broaden Coinbase’s role beyond operating a trading platform, but their financial contribution needs to be assessed using disclosed operating and revenue data.

Readers can explore the network through the official Base website and its developer documentation. These resources explain the infrastructure and tools available to developers, rather than confirming any specific earnings contribution for the quarter.

What Coinbase’s Q3 Results Could Clarify

Coinbase’s third-quarter report is expected to provide concrete figures on trading activity, transaction revenue, stablecoin income, and overall profitability. Comparing the results with analyst estimates should help investors understand whether September’s market rebound materially improved the company’s performance and how much revenue came from sources beyond spot trading.

The main questions are whether trading volumes recovered enough to lift transaction revenue, whether USDC-related income remained resilient, and whether derivatives and newer businesses contributed meaningfully to the overall business mix. The answers will help clarify the balance between Coinbase’s exposure to crypto-market cycles and its efforts to diversify revenue.

Until the company releases its results, the estimates remain forecasts rather than confirmed outcomes. The quarter’s figures will provide a more complete basis for assessing Coinbase’s financial performance amid changing crypto-market activity and competition across trading platforms.
