Coinbase’s Tokenized Stocks Gain Early Traction

Coinbase’s tokenized stock market on Base is showing early signs of growing trading activity, with daily volume increasing since the products launched on the Ethereum Layer 2 network.

The rollout represents Coinbase’s attempt to bring traditional U.S. equities into an onchain environment where eligible users can trade tokenized shares around the clock. Base describes the assets as real shares brought onchain, with Coinbase issuing matching tokens backed 1:1 by underlying shares held in regulated custody. Base tokenized stocks

The market is still in its early stages, but the increase in activity has drawn attention because tokenized stocks can be traded through decentralized exchanges and integrated into other applications across the Base ecosystem.

How Coinbase Tokenized Stocks Work

Coinbase launched its first tokenized stocks on Base on Aug. 24, 2026, initially offering tokens linked to Apple, NVIDIA, Meta and Alphabet. The product was made available to eligible users outside the United States.

The tokens use Base’s B20 standard and represent economic exposure to the underlying shares. Coinbase says the tokens are issued against real shares held in a regulated, bankruptcy-remote custody structure. The tokens can be held in self-custodial wallets and used across supported Base applications. Coinbase Tokenized Stocks

That structure differs from a token that merely attempts to copy the price of a stock. Coinbase states that its tokenized stocks represent a beneficial claim on real underlying shares, while eligibility and availability depend on jurisdiction and applicable restrictions.

Daily Trading Activity Has Risen Quickly

The growth in daily volume has been one of the most notable developments since the launch.

Third-party market data cited in recent reports showed Base tokenized-stock DEX trading reaching approximately $100 million in a single day on Sept. 12. That milestone came only a few weeks after Coinbase introduced the first products on Base.

Other data also showed the cumulative market expanding rapidly. TokenPost reported on Sept. 23 that Coinbase’s Base tokenized stocks had reached roughly $1.02 billion in cumulative trading volume, while primary Aerodrome pools held around $12.97 million in combined liquidity.

The difference between trading volume and liquidity is important. A large cumulative volume figure does not mean that the same amount of capital is sitting in liquidity pools waiting to absorb trades. Volume measures transactions over time, while liquidity describes the capital available for trading at a particular point.

Aerodrome Is a Major Trading Venue

A significant portion of the activity has been concentrated on Aerodrome, one of the main decentralized exchanges on Base.

Token Terminal data showed approximately $730.9 million in tokenized-stock DEX volume on Base over a 30-day period, with Aerodrome accounting for about $557.1 million, or roughly 76% of the measured volume. Uniswap v4 was the second-largest venue in that dataset with approximately $139.3 million.

This concentration means the early market is not evenly distributed across Base's decentralized-exchange ecosystem. Aerodrome has emerged as a key venue for trading the tokenized equities, while other protocols are beginning to support the assets.

Base itself lists Aerodrome among the ecosystem platforms providing liquidity for Coinbase tokenized stocks, alongside applications such as Aave, Morpho, Uniswap-related infrastructure and Chainlink. Base tokenized stock ecosystem

More Stocks Are Joining the Market

The initial four-stock launch has since expanded.

Base's official tokenized-stock page currently lists Coinbase-issued tokens connected to NVIDIA, Meta, Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, Strategy, SanDisk, SpaceX and Tesla. These assets are designed to operate within the Base ecosystem and can be traded, held or used across supported DeFi applications. Base stocks marketplace

Coinbase says its tokenized stocks are available under Regulation S and are not available to people in the United States or other restricted jurisdictions. Primary minting and redemption are also limited to KYC-onboarded institutional partners and authorized participants. Coinbase tokenized-stock information

The geographic restriction is an important part of the current market structure. The growth in Base trading volume therefore does not represent U.S. retail investors directly trading these tokenized shares.

Why Base Is Being Used for Tokenized Equities

Base is positioning tokenized stocks as more than blockchain versions of conventional shares.

Because the assets exist as tokens, they can potentially be integrated into other blockchain applications. Base highlights use cases including trading, lending and borrowing, allowing tokenized stocks to interact with decentralized finance infrastructure.

The network's official materials describe the broader goal as creating an environment where financial assets can operate continuously and interact with programmable blockchain applications. Base tokenized stocks announcement

For Coinbase, this creates a connection between traditional equity exposure and the existing onchain financial ecosystem. A tokenized share can remain in a self-custodial wallet rather than being limited to a conventional brokerage account, subject to the product's eligibility and legal restrictions.

The Market Is Growing, but It Is Still Early

The rapid increase in trading volume provides an early indication of activity around Coinbase's tokenized-stock launch, but the market remains relatively small compared with traditional U.S. equity markets.

Data from Stockify showed that the broader Base tokenized-equity market had about $26.5 million in tokenized-equity supply as of Sept. 19, across multiple issuers. The same dataset showed Coinbase accounting for the largest share of the outstanding supply among the issuers tracked.

That contrast between relatively modest outstanding asset value and high cumulative trading volume is worth watching. It shows that trading activity can turn over the available token supply multiple times, but it does not by itself establish how deep or resilient liquidity will be during larger market moves.

Coinbase's tokenized stocks are therefore still in an early market-building phase. The rising daily volume suggests increasing activity, while liquidity, regulatory eligibility, issuer expansion and adoption across Base's DeFi ecosystem will determine how the market develops from here.

Tokenized Stocks Could Become a Larger Part of Base

The early trajectory of Coinbase's tokenized stocks adds another real-world asset category to Base.

The network already supports stablecoins, tokenized Treasuries and other blockchain-based financial assets. Coinbase's stock products extend that infrastructure into public equities, giving eligible users access to tokenized versions of recognizable U.S. companies.

For now, the most important development is not the size of the market compared with traditional stocks, but the speed at which a new onchain equity market has begun generating activity.

As Coinbase adds more assets and Base applications integrate them into trading and lending products, the next phase will show whether the early increase in daily volume can translate into deeper liquidity and broader use across the onchain financial ecosystem.
